Sports Illustrated and Baseball Weekly both noted that Mudcats' hats were purchased by Muhammad Ali, Willard Scott and President Jimmy Carter. 
The new Mudcats brand proves to be a hit as merchandise sales top $225,000. Following the 1990 season, the Columbus Mudcats announce plans to move to Zebulon, North Carolina and become the Carolina Mudcats. Mudcats, Generals, Cannons, River Rats and Scrambled Dogs were among the thousands of suggestions submitted by fans. The new team name is chosen by local fans following a name the team contest. Steve Bryant re-brands the Columbus Astros as the Columbus Mudcats and expands the team front office. Bryant also purchased the Carolina League's Greensboro Hornets in 1988. In all, over 1,000 professional baseball players, including more than 300 future major leaguers, have made Zebulon and Five County Stadium a stop on their climb to the big leagues.
Star players including Miguel Cabrera (2003), Dontrelle Willis (2003), Matt Holliday (2002), Tim Wakefield (1991/1993), Francisco Lindor (2013), Devin Williams (2018), and Corbin Burnes (2017) all played for the Mudcats at some point during their careers.
